LPAT error correction -- test yourself

The following 2o-question quiz is ENTIRELY based on the 20 questions in LPAT 2018 Paper 2 Task 2B (correction of errors/ problems). Look at the sentences, identity the errors or problems and explain them using HKEAA grammar terminology.

I got all 18 of them correct and got level 5. Test yourself and see how many questions you can answer correctly.

a. Taking a bus is convenience.

The word 'convenience' should be 'convenient'. This is a type of (1) error.

b. Things like wash dishes and do the laundry are more easy than they seem.

We should use 'washing' instead of 'wash' because 'like' is a (2) in the sentence. Then, the gerunds 'washing dishes' and 'doing the laundry' would become (3) structures liked by 'and'. Also, we should use a (4) 'easier' with a (5) -er, rather than 'more easy' because 'easy' has only (6) .

c. Students are lack of vocabularies. Also, the contents of their writing are also weak.

One way to correct this is to use 'lacking in', where 'lacking' is a/an (7) . Also, we should use 'content' instead of 'contents' because in this case, it is (8) .

d. Children should not allow to do housework because it can be dangerous.

The correct way to say it is 'should not be allowed to do' because in a (9) construction such as this, the (10) verb follows 'should'.
