Gone are the days when young people aspire to a career as a solicitor, investment bankers, or management trainee in a global conglomerate. I asked my young nephew last week what he wanted to be when he grows up and he casually answered: an online gamer slash organizer of gaming contests. I was initially taken aback by his answer: when has this become accepted? Back in my days, if I had said I wanted to become anything less than an AO, my parents would have threatened to disown me, yelling “You are not my son! You will be a beggar!” Should I be apprehensive of my nephew’s choice? Is internet gaming just a fad which does not promise any long-term career prospect? Or should I congratulate him for being able to turn their passion into business? Upon second thought, I reckon that online gaming is absolutely a viable career option. I cite the famous Venn diagram career option analysis: a viable career one where what you are passionate about overlaps what the world needs—in other words, a passion with a mission makes good profession. Clearly, the first point of reference, passion, requires no elaboration for any e-sports fanatics and avid gamers. It’s going to be their dream job and imagine how awesome their life would be if they could develop their career doing what they love.
